Much of the damage in Seattle was in the historic Pioneer Square district, which has many older brick buildings, and in the industrial blocks south of downtown known as SoDo. Downtown skyscrapers, built more recently and conforming with earthquake-resistance standards, swayed but sustained relatively minor damage.
At Starbucks Center, the headquarters of the coffee company, the lip of the brick roof to the right of the landmark clock tower and emblem crumpled and fell off, leaving a pile of rubble on the street..
In Pioneer Square, the Fenix Underground nightclub was among the hardest hit. Rick Wyatt, a co-owner, said his partner, Mike Lagervall, was in the basement when the quake started. Mr. Lagervall managed to get up the stairs and out the front door before the brick facade came tumbling down from three floors above. A huge hole was torn from the roof to the top row of windows. At street level, the club's green awnings were shredded from falling bricks and covered with gray dust; two parked cars were also hit heavily by debris, and a pile of 110-year-old bricks blocked the front entrance.

Fittingly the earthquake resulted in a massive underworld operation using the "world's biggest tunneling machine called "Bertha" directly underneath the pioneer square!
At 57 feet in diameter, it's touted as the world's biggest tunneling machine. It was even given a name, Bertha.
But now, after digging just over 1,000 feet, Bertha is broken down and stuck underneath Seattle's downtown waterfront.
And fixing the massive mess could cost taxpayers millions.
The tunneling machine is the key workhorse in a $3.1 billion tunnel project aimed at replacing the Alaska Way Viaduct, a double-decker elevated highway that was damaged in the 2001 Nisqually earthquake. Bertha's meltdown, though, has put the project in jeopardy of being the West Coast version of the biggest public works boondoggle in U.S. history, Boston's "big dig" -- which cost taxpayers $14.6 billion, nearly four times the original price tag.

The City of Seattle Pioneer Square Preservation District was created in 1970, although the original nomination was presented to the Seattle City Council in 1969 and rejected. The district, with slightly different boundaries, was also listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. All of the buildings in the district date from after the Great Fire of June 6, 1889, which reduced roughly 30 blocks or more of the original City of Seattle to ashes.

After the moniker flopped locally (the Seattle Post-Intelligencer ran editorials opposing it), the Bureau hired Walsh and Associates to turn around public opinion.
Walsh sought out contacts in the National Football League and at Sports Illustrated and convinced them to always refer to Seattle as “Emerald City” on their broadcasts and in print, which they did. Then Walsh created what became the hugely popular Emerald City Marathon footrace, and that sealed the deal. Seattle has been the “Emerald City” since.

The 2010 Copiapó mining accident, also known then as the "Chilean mining accident", began in the afternoon of Thursday, 5 August 2010 as a significant cave-in at the troubled 121-year-old San José copper–gold mine. The mine is located in the Atacama Desert about 45 kilometers (28 mi) north of the regional capital of Copiapó, in northern Chile.[1] The buried men, who became known as "Los 33" ("The 33"), were trapped 700 meters (2,300 ft) underground and about 5 kilometers (3 mi) from the mine's entrance via spiraling underground service ramps. The mixed crew of experienced miners and technical support personnel, with less experience working underground, survived for a record 69 days deep underground before their rescue.[2][3] Previous geological instability at the old mine and a long record of safety violations for the mine's owners had resulted in a series of fines and accidents, including eight deaths, during the dozen years leading up to this accident.[4][5][6] As a result of the mine's notorious history, it was originally thought that the workers had probably not survived the collapse or would starve to death before they were found, if ever.
The country of Chile had just endured the 2010 Chile earthquake and its associated tsunami less than six months before the accident. The Chilean people's strong empathy for the workers and their grief-stricken families and the nation's tremendous outpouring of public concern led the national government to take over the faltering search and rescue operation from the mine's financially strapped owners, privately held San Esteban Mining Company. Seventeen days after the accident, on 22 August, a note written in bold red letters appeared taped to a drill bit when it was pulled to the surface after penetrating an area believed to be accessible to the trapped workers. It read simply "Estamos bien en el refugio, los 33" (English: "We are well in the shelter, the 33 of us"). Chileans demanded that Chile's leaders find a way to bring the trapped workers safely home to their waiting families.
