Von Braun Paradigm

How the Space Shuttle Was Born

Enterprise Atlantis leads to Mars:
Their importance was cemented in the so-called "von Braun paradigm," an idea widely circulated at the time by the famed German rocket engineer Wernher von Braun. Von Braun came to the U.S. as part of Operation Paperclip and quickly jump-started the nation's rocket-development programs.
Space exploration, in the von Braun paradigm, should involve the following sequential steps: Put a human in space; develop a reusable spacecraft, making access to space cheaper and easier; use this vehicle to build a space station; inhabit the space station and employ it as a base from which to launch manned expeditions to the moon and, later, Mars.
In early 1969, President Richard Nixon had established a space task group to help determine NASA's post-Apollo direction. In September of that year, the group delivered its report, which recommended going back to the von Braun paradigm in some fashion: shuttle, space station, manned moon trips and, finally, manned missions to Mars.Nixon was not pleased with this recommendation, Launius said. The president thought the plan was far too expensive for NASA's budget, which had been cut from a high of $5.9 billion (4.4 percent of the federal budget) in 1966 to $4.25 billion (2.3 percent of the federal budget) in 1969. So he zeroed in on a single aspect of the von Braun paradigm, ditching the others.
The first space shuttle, named Enterprise, was rolled out in September 1976. Enterprise made some glide flights in 1977, but never reached space. However, the second orbiter to come off the line did. Columbia blasted off on April 12, 1981, and the rest is history.
And after Atlantis touches down next month, the shuttle program will be history, too.

In 1952, a German scientist predicted the name “Elon” would be associated with the colonization of Mars

NASA's 'Discovery of Atlantis' precedes humans on Mars which symbolically represents the Mars falcon/Horus/Osiris (phoenix underground) rising from the underworld.
It’s the hidden meaning of the names of the space shuttles. “A Colombian Enterprise to Endeavor for the Discovery of Atlantis… and all Challengers shall be destroyed,” taken from the late William Cooper’s writings, which can be read here.

The United States Congress approved the construction of Endeavour in 1987 to replace Challenger, which was lost in 1986.
Structural spares built during the construction of Discovery and Atlantis were used in its assembly. NASA chose, on cost grounds, to build Endeavour from spares rather than refitting Enterprise or accepting a Rockwell International proposal to build two shuttles for the price of one.

Burned down in the Great Fire of 1889, the original core of Seattle, now known as Pioneer Square, emerged from the ashes to become a vibrant commercial area.

The City of Seattle Pioneer Square Preservation District was created in 1970, although the original nomination was presented to the Seattle City Council in 1969 and rejected. The district, with slightly different boundaries, was also listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. Since then, there have been two subsequent boundary expansions, one in 1978 and one in 1988. All of the buildings in the district date from after the Great Fire of June 6, 1889, which reduced roughly 30 blocks or more of the original City of Seattle to ashes.
Buildings within the district date from four successive periods of significance. The first period of significance spans from right after the Great Fire of June 6, 1889 to 1899, during which Seattle’s commercial district, known as the “burnt district,” was rebuilt.
Within a month of the fire, eighty-eight buildings were either projected or already underway. The Seattle newspapers of 1889 took real delight in recounting the rebuilding of Seattle.
“There is a feature of the new life in Seattle which will not grow old and that is the work of building. The scene in the burnt district is gradually changing for the better and excavations and foundations for many new buildings are already under way… New announcements of proposed buildings continue to be made and they are always met with interest and pleasure by the general public."
“Rise Like a Phoenix” and “wings of the phoenix” were two typical references to Seattle’s rebirth.

- Space Shuttle Atlantis.
Its maiden flight was STS-51-J from 3 to 7 October 1985.

Atlantis embarked on its 33rd and final mission, also the final mission of a space shuttle, STS-135, on 8 July 2011.

First pilot of the Falcon: Enter final Atlantis?

Douglas Gerald Hurley (born October 21, 1966) is an engineer and NASA astronaut. He piloted Space Shuttle mission STS-127,[2]which launched July 15, 2009. He was assigned and flew as pilot for STS-135, the final flight of the Space Shuttle program, in July 2011.
In July 2015, NASA announced Hurley as one of the first astronauts for U.S. Commercial spaceflights[4] Subsequently, he has started working with Boeing and SpaceX to train in their commercial crew vehicles, along with the other chosen astronauts - Sunita WilliamsRobert Behnken and Eric Boe.
