Overview[edit]
DESTINY+ will be launched from Uchinoura Space Center by an Epsilon rocket in 2022 into low Earth orbit, and will spend 1.5 years raising its orbit with ion engines.[2] A Lunar flyby will accelerate the probe into an interplanetary orbit. During this cruise time it will flyby a few near Earth objects for study, including the transition body 3200 Phaethon, as well as measure interplanetary and interstellar dust.[3]
The probe's ion engines have the capability to perform another orbit transfer to study additional objects.[1]
Objectives[edit]
DESTINY+ will be a technology demonstrator to further improve operations of low cost solar electric propulsion in deep space. It will also demonstrate innovative light-weight solar array panel technology. The scientific aspect of this mission is to understand origin and nature of dusts, which are key sources of organic compounds to Earth. It will also observe dusts from comet/asteroid 3200 Phaethon using a dust analyzer and will map its surface using a multiband telescopic camera to understand the mechanisms of dust ejection.[2] The spacecraft will flyby as close as 500 km (310 mi) from 3200 Phaethon.[2]
Spacecraft[edit]
DESTINY+ will use ultra light-weight solar panels and advanced thermal control devices, along with compact avionics. The spacecraft is designed to tolerate a radiation dose up to approximately 30 krad by using a 3 mm aluminum shield.[2]
Propulsion[edit]
The spacecraft will be propelled by four μ10 solar electric ion engines,[2] as used by Hayabusa and Hayabusa2, but while its predecessors operated only up to three engines simultaneously, DESTINY+ will use all four simultaneously[4] for a total thrust of 40 mN (specific impulse: 3000 s; acceleration: 83 μm/s2; power: 1670 W.[2]) The total dry mass (excludes xenon propellant) of the ion engine system is 59 kg (130 lb).[2]
Payload[edit]
DESTINY PLUS will cary three scientific instruments:[3]
- DESTINY Dust Analyzer (DDA) — The DESTINY Dust Analyzer (2.7 kg) will be provided by the German Aerospace Center (DLR),[5] and is being developed by the University of Stuttgart.[2]
- Telescopic Camera for Phaethon (TCAP) — The telescopic camera has a mass of 15.8 kg.[2]
- Multiband Camera for Phaethon (MCAP) — The multiband camera has a mass of 3.5 kg and will detect light in 390 nm, 550 nm, 700 nm, 850 nm wavelengths.[2]

The first fifteen asteroids to be discovered were given symbols by astronomers as a type of shorthand notation. Psyche was given an iconic symbol, as were several other asteroids discovered over the next few years. The symbol , a semicircle topped by a star, represents a butterfly's wing, symbol of the soul (psyche is the Greek word for 'soul'), and a star.[8] In 1851, German astronomer J. F. Encke suggested using a circled number, and 16 Psyche was the first new asteroid to be discovered that was designated using this scheme when American astronomer James Ferguson published his observations in 1852.[9]

"The decision will be announced in mid-April. If the mission, dubbed Athena for the Greek goddess the asteroid is named for, is approved, it would follow in the path of NASA's Dawn mission. That spacecraft explored two other giant objects in the asteroid belt, Vesta and Ceres, before its mission ended this fall.
If selected, the mission would launch in August 2022, riding piggyback with NASA's Psyche mission that is bound for an asteroid made nearly entirely of metal. "We would race Psyche to Mars, use Mars as a gravity assist, and then catch Pallas," O'Rourke said. The Pallas flyby would come about a year after the launch."

Ryugu, Bennu, Lucy, and "Didymos", the Greek word for twin all are diamond- shaped asteroids and Rosetta flew by one as well.
DART also is based on ROSA and DRACO

Lucy and Dart also launch and impact in 2022
Lucy is a planned NASA space probe that will tour six Jupiter trojans, asteroids which share Jupiter's orbit around the Sun, orbiting either ahead of or behind the planet and one main belt asteroid. All will be fly-by missions.[3]
On 4 January 2017, Lucy was chosen, along with the Psyche mission, as NASA's Discovery Program missions 13 and 14 respectively.[3][4]
The mission is named after the 'Lucy' hominin skeleton, because the study of Trojans could reveal the "fossils of planet formation": materials that clumped together in the early history of the Solar System to form planets and other bodies.[5] The Australopithecus itself was named for a Beatles song, "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds".[6]
Lucy was submitted as part of a call for proposals for the next mission(s) for Discovery Program that closed in February 2015. Proposals had to be ready to launch by the end of 2021. 28 proposals were received in all.
On 30 September 2015, Lucy was selected as one of five finalist missions, each of which received US$3 million to produce more in-depth concept design studies and analyses.[12][13][14][15] Its fellow finalists were DAVINCI, NEOCam, Psyche and VERITAS. On 4 January 2017, two of the five proposals—Lucy and Psyche—were selected for development and launch.
On 31 January 2019, NASA announced that Lucy would launch in October 2021 on an Atlas V 401 rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The total cost for the launch is estimated to be US$148.3 million.[2]
On 13 February 2019, SpaceX protested the contract award, claiming that it could launch Lucy into the same orbit at a "significantly cheaper cost". Should this contract be reversed and SpaceX awarded instead, Lucy would become its second NASA probe after TESS, and would be flown in an expendable configuration.[citation needed]
2022 Impact
Originally, the European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA had independent plans for a mission to test asteroid deflection strategies, and by 2015 they struck a collaboration called AIDA —now cancelled— that would have had the two spacecraft launch separately but work in synergy.[5][6][7] Under the proposal, the European spacecraft, AIM, would have launched in December 2020, and DART in July 2021. AIM would have orbited the larger asteroid and study its composition and that of its moon. DARTwould then impact the moon on October 2022, during a close approach to Earth.[6] AIM would have studied the asteroid's strength, surface physical properties and its internal structure, as well as measure the effect on the asteroid moon's orbit around the larger asteroid. Since the AIM orbiter was cancelled, the full characterization of the asteroids will not be obtained, and the effects of the impact by DART will be monitored from ground-based telescopes and radar.[8][7]

The Near-Earth Asteroid Scout is a planned mission by NASA to develop a low-cost CubeSat solar sail spacecraft capable of encountering near-Earth asteroids and taking high resolution images. It is expected to launch in 2020, and 1991 VG is the planned target.[13]
The NEA Scout will be one of 13 CubeSats to be carried with the Orion EM-1 mission into a heliocentric orbit in cis-lunar space on the maiden flight of the Space Launch System(SLS) scheduled to launch in 2020.[6][5] The most likely target for the mission is 1991 VG, but this may change based on launch date or other factors.
Aaru is also known as the home of Osiris.
Asteroid Redirect Mission
The Asteroid Redirect Mission (ARM), also known as the Asteroid Retrieval and Utilization (ARU) mission and the Asteroid Initiative, was a space mission proposed by NASA in 2013. The Asteroid Retrieval Robotic Mission (ARRM) spacecraft would rendezvous with a large near-Earth asteroid and use robotic arms with anchoring grippers to retrieve a 4-meter boulder from the asteroid.
The Exploration Mission-2, or EM-2, is a scheduled 2022 mission of the Space Launch System and planned to be the first crewed mission of NASA'sOrion spacecraft. Originally, the crewed missionwas intended to collect samples from a capturedasteroid in lunar orbit by the now cancelled roboticAsteroid Redirect Mission.
