An unusually big asteroid will soon pass closer to Earth than the moon
See the 2nd-largest meteor explosion in modern history
On Dec. 18, 2018, a school bus-size meteor exploded over Earth with an impact energy of roughly 10 atomic bombs. According to NASA, the blast was the second-largest meteor impact since the organization began tracking them 30 years ago, bested only by the infamous fireball that exploded over Chelyabinsk, Russia, in Feb. 2013.

It was in September 2013 that the land of the rising sun was selected to host the 2020 Olympics, just before the end of Deep Impact and the lighting of the firebird flame. In dec 2019 Hayabusa 2 departs Ryugu and days later on Jan 4th 2020 the original deep impact asteroid mission would have flown past 2002GT.

In a 2005 "deep impact" mission to a comet, NASA observed fragments after blasting the surface but did not collect them.
The asteroid, named Ryugu after an undersea palace in a Japanese folktale, is about 900 metres (3,000 feet) in diameter and about 300 million kilometres (180 million miles) from Earth.
