December 3-16, 2018: Xmas Comet star

SpaceX CRS-16, also known as SpX-16, is a Commercial Resupply Service mission to the International Space Station scheduled for launch on 1 December 2018 aboard a Falcon 9 rocket.[1] The mission was contracted by NASA and is flown by SpaceX.

Soyuz MS-11 is a Soyuz spaceflight initially planned for December 2018.[2] It will transport three members of the Expedition 58crew to the International Space Station. MS-11 will be the 140th flight of a Soyuz spacecraft. The crew will consist of a Russian commander, and an American and a Canadian flight engineer. Following the failure of Soyuz MS-10, the flight was rescheduled to occur on December 3, 2018, earlier than initially planned.[1]

The final Soyuz launch of 2018 is a golden phoenix just as the first was.

Russia opens 2018 campaign with Soyuz 2-1A launch of Kanopus-V

D-Star ONE Phoenix is an amateur radio satellite built to the three-unit CubeSat standard and equipped with four radio modules. Two of these will be reserved for telemetry and operational data, while the other two will be made available to amateur radio operators. The satellite replaces D-Star ONE, which was lost in a launch failure late last year. Phoenix – named for the mythical bird, rising from the ashes – was put together from spare parts in less than 44 days.

CRS 16 is rescheduled to launch to the ISS on December 4 the day after Osiris Rex reaches Bennu. Crs 15 launched the day after  Hayabusa2 reached Ryugu.

Brightest Comet Of 2018 To Light Up The Sky In December

Comet 46P/Wirtanen will light up the sky on December 16 and is expected to be bright enough to spot with the naked eye.

The 2013 perihelion passage was not favorable, only reaching a magnitude of 14.7.[5] Since between January 23 and September 26, the comet had an elongation less than 20 degrees from the Sun.
On 16 December 2018 the comet will pass 0.0781 AU (11,680,000 km; 7,260,000 mi) (~30 LD) from Earth,[3] reaching an estimated magnitude of 3 to 7.5,[6][7] making this pass the brightest one predicted, and the brightest close approach for the next 20 years.[8] Its magnitude could peak as bright as magnitude 3 near its December 16, 2018 closest approach.[9]
The 2018 close approach, combined with Wirtanen's brightness provides an opportunity to study a potential future spacecraft mission target in detail. A worldwide observing campaign [10] has been organized to capitalize on the favorable circumstances of this apparition.

Best comet of 2018 is approaching

On December 8, 2018, comet 46P/Wirtanen should be easier to locate. Note that stars Saiph and Rigel (on the right side of Orion) point to the comet. Also, the celestial visitor should be slightly brighter by then. "Comet 46P / Wirtanen will have its closest approach to Earth on Sunday, December 16, 2018. It will pass to only 0.0777 Astronomical Units (AU), or what is the same to 11,623,000 kilometers away (very close) .

This comet will be visible to the naked eye for several weeks showing a green tail impressively, almost twice as wide as the planet Jupiter."

Hyperactive comet Wirtanen to show off during historically close flyby

The small comet's latest pass by Earth could be its brightest, making it visible for weeks during the holiday season.
The comet, discovered by Carl Wirtanen, was actually the original target of the Rosetta spacecraft that visited and landed on the comet 67P, and it could be a destination for another spacecraft in the future.

"Comet 46P in particular will remain within 10 million miles of Earth for several weeks, from December 4 through 28, 2018," said Goddard researcher Michael DiSanti. "This will permit detailed studies of its material, as successive regions of the 's nucleus become exposed to sunlight.

46P was the original target of Osiris.
The international Rosetta mission, now planned by ESA to be launched in January 2003, will provide a unique opportunity to directly study the nucleus of comet 46P/Wirtanen and its activity from a heliocentric distance of 3.2 AU to the perihelion passage at 1.06 AU in July 2013. We describe here the design, the development and the performances of the telescope of the Narrow Angle Camera of the OSIRIS experiment which will give high resolution images of the cometary nucleus in the visible spectrum.

On top of that Osiris Rex reaches Bennu December 3rd, just as 46P "Rosetta/Osiris" should be visible if bright enough and Insight lands on Elysium planitia a week prior.

REDMOND, Wash., Aug. 24, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Powered by Aerojet Rocketdyne propulsion, OSIRIS-REx’s long-awaited approach of Asteroid Bennu has officially begun. With the asteroid now in sight, the spacecraft’s onboard thrusters will begin to conduct a number of approach maneuvers to match Bennu’s orbital velocity to prepare for arrival on Dec. 3.

Venus will also shine bright as the Xmas star this December.
https://earthsky.org/?p=291921

Ascending in the morning ...
For morning visibility, Venus in now in a literal and figurative sense "rising to the occasion." Two weeks after the planet reached solar conjunction, it now rises before the break of dawn, more than 90 minutes ahead of sunrise. From here on, Venus will rise 3 minutes earlier each day, so that by Dec. 17, it will rise 3 hours and 45 minutes before sunrise. It will blaze in a completely dark sky for more than 2 hours before the first hints of morning twilight appear.
Venus will reach the pinnacle of its brilliance on Dec. 1, when the planet will shine at an eye-popping magnitude of -4.9. That's 19 times brighter than Venus' nearest planetary competitor, Jupiter, and a full 25 times brighter than Sirius, the brightest of all stars. If you live in a rural location with minimal light pollution, you'll readily be able to make out that the planet casts a visible shadow. And if you follow Venus right on through sunrise, the planet will be visible to your naked eye in full daylight: a tiny, white speck plainly evident against the blue daytime sky.
In some ways, we could even regard Venus as this year's Christmas Star, glowing with stunning radiance "… in the east," recalling the quote from the Bible's Book of Matthew.
