On August 30, 2016 it was announced that SES-10 would launch aboard a Falcon 9 full thrust rocket on the fourth quarter of 2016. It would be the first launch of a reused first stage of such rocket, using in this case the first stage of the 23rd flight of the Falcon 9.^[7][8] As is common with rocket launches, there have been several delays, and currently the launch is scheduled for late March, 2017.

Falcon 9 Full Thrust—also known as Falcon 9 v1.2 —is the third version of the SpaceX Falcon 9 orbital launch vehicle. Designed in 2014–2015, it began launch operations in December 2015. Over 50 launches are planned for it over the years 2017–2019.

In December 2015, the Full Thrust version of the Falcon 9 was the first launch vehicle on an orbital trajectory to successfully vertically-land a first stage and recover the rocket, following an extensive technology development program in 2011–2015 that had developed some of the technology on Falcon 9 v1.0 and Falcon 9 v1.1 launch vehicle first stages.

Falcon 9 Full Thrust is a substantial upgrade over the older Falcon 9 v1.1 rocket, which flew its last mission in January 2016. With uprated first- and second-stage engines, larger second-stage propellant tank, and propellant densification, the vehicle can carry substantial payloads to geostationary orbit and perform a propulsive landing for recovery

The SES-10 mission will mark a historic milestone on the road to full and rapid reusability as the world’s first reflight of an orbital class rocket. Falcon 9’s first stage for the SES-10 mission previously supported the successful CRS-8 mission in April 2016.

SpaceX is targeting launch of SES-10 from historic Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A) at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

It also will deploy a self-hammering heat probe that will burrow deeper into the ground than any previous device on the Red Planet. March 23 project update: Getting ready for Bertha’s breakthrough

Seattle Tunnel Partners is making final preparations for the SR 99 tunneling machine’s arrival at the disassembly pit near Seattle Center. Because mining rates will continue to vary as crews approach the pit, we can’t predict when Bertha’s breakthrough will occur. As of this morning, the cutterhead was approximately 320 feet from the finish line. We will continue to provide regular progress updates along the way.

We recognize that there is great interest surrounding this stage of the project, and we are working on ways to share this historic moment with the public. We will be activating a new time-lapse camera as well as streaming video of the disassembly pit prior to breakthrough. These cameras will offer the best view of Bertha’s arrival in the pit. We will also continue to share photos and provide frequent updates via social media, including daily progress updates. For safety reasons, the public will not be allowed in the construction zone during the breakthrough.

Look for more updates soon about the breakthrough sequence, the process for disassembling Bertha and the work that remains before the tunnel opens in 2019.

Walsh eventually grew weary of sports agentry and morphed into an events promoter, scoring his first major achievement when he brought the 1984 NCAA Final Four to the Kingdome. Largely through the promotional efforts of Walsh and his company, Bob Walsh and Associates, the phrase “March Madness” was coined. Two more Final Fours, in 1989 and 1995, followed.

Seattle is the “Emerald City” largely because of Walsh. In the late 1980s, the Seattle Convention and Visitor’s Bureau held a contest to re-brand Seattle, then the “Queen City,” into something hipper. The Bureau ran a public contest seeking new names and the winning entry, ironically submitted by a California resident, was “Emerald City.”

After the moniker flopped locally (the Seattle Post-Intelligencer ran editorials opposing it), the Bureau hired Walsh and Associates to turn around public opinion.

Walsh sought out contacts in the National Football League and at Sports Illustrated and convinced them to always refer to Seattle as “Emerald City” on their broadcasts and in print, which they did. Then Walsh created what became the hugely popular Emerald City Marathon footrace, and that sealed the deal. Seattle has been the “Emerald City” since.

Bertha was designed and manufactured by Hitachi Zosen Sakai Works of Osaka, Japan, and is the world's largest earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine,^[13]

During drilling, the well encountered enormous pressure – almost 25,000 psi (172,369 kPa). No commercial hydrocarbons were found before drilling hit a molten sulfur deposit (which melted the drill bit).
