While you might think our immediate concern was the fires on the pad and their sources, my civil engineer representative informed me that during the explosion, the deluge system had been damaged and most of the water was being shot up into the air rather than being dispersed across the pad as designed. The SpaceX rep informed me that while the deluge wasn’t functioning optimally it was still helping to suppress the fire somewhat. That was fine except for one thing -- our 1.2 million gallon tank was being depleted at a rapid rate and there was no way to refill the tanks fast enough to sustain the output. If the tanks ran dry then the motors to the pumps would burn up, which would render the deluge system inoperable for other launch pads meaning our upcoming ULA launch might then be in danger.
Quick work saved the OSIRIS-REx asteroid mission from nearby explosion
OSIRIS-REx was already mounted on top of the two-stage Atlas 5 launcher at the time of the Falcon 9 explosion. Air ducts and electrical cables connected the spacecraft with ground supplies until liftoff.
Officials started to send a team to Complex 41 to repair the chillers, then Lindsey said he received word that all the pressures were lost.
“Technicians had to get to the spacecraft immediately,” he wrote.
Complex 41 sits on NASA property, just outside the limits of Cape Canaveral Air Force Station to the north of Complex 40. The Air Force coordinated with Kennedy Space Center officials to reach Complex 41 through their roadblocks and get to the pad without traveling near the fire still burning at the SpaceX launch facility, according to Lindsey.NASA formally suspended the Mars InSight mission. The lander was set to launch in March 2016 for a September 2016 touchdown.
The quick thinking allowed technicians to get to OSIRIS-REx in “plenty of time not to only save the spacecraft, but to keep the planned launch on schedule.”
Within two days of the explosion, OSIRIS-REx was back on track for its Sept. 8 launch date, according to Tory Bruno, ULA’s president and CEO.
“We were evacuated, so we had some schedule to make up, and we had to do some special cleaning,” Bruno said.The cleaning was a precaution to ensure smoke that blew north from the SpaceX explosion did not contaminate any sensitive parts of the rocket or the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft.

A mission to study the inner workings of Mars is now set to launch in the spring of 2018, NASA announced today (Sept. 2).

The Canyon Fire was a wildfire that burned on Vandenberg Air Force Base in Santa Barbara County, California during September 2016. By the time the fire was contained on September 24, it had burned 12,742 acres (51.6 km2) of land.[2] Due to the nature of the activities that take place on the Base, there were a number of unique challenges posed during the fire including the presence of potentially hazardous materials.[3]
The InSight spacecraft has been returned to Lockheed Martin's factory in Colorado for storage, and the Atlas V rocket intended to launch the spacecraft has been reassigned to the WorldView-4 mission.[16]
NASA officials announced on 9 March 2016 that InSight is not planned for cancellation, but would instead be delayed until the 2018 launch window at an estimated cost of US$150 million.[3][5] The spacecraft is scheduled to launch on 5 May 2018 for a Mars landing on 26 November; the flight plan remains unchanged, and launch will take place aboard an Atlas V rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base.[3][5]
The launch is being managed by NASA's Launch Services Program. Originally scheduled for 4 March 2016 on an Atlas V 401 (4 meter fairing/zero (0) solid rocket boosters/single (1) engine Centaur) from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, USA.[51] This would have been the first American interplanetary mission to launch from California.[51]Impacting the rocket that was scheduled to carry Mars Insight and the falcon phoenix!
Fires Will Keep Atlas V Rocket, WorldView-4 Craft At Vandenberg AFB Longer
OSIRIS-REx was sitting atop an Atlas V rocket at an adjoining facility, set to launch a week later, when the SpaceX rocket exploded during a static test, NASA said.
The fire was about a Kilometer from SpaceX’s SLC-4 complex where ten Iridium-NEXT communications satellites are being prepared for launch on a Falcon 9.
A United Launch Alliance Atlas V carrying the WorldView-4 earth observation satellite that was set to launch on September 18 from Vandenberg AFB Space Launch Complex 3 had to be delayed.[11] According to the Emergency Operations Center commander, base procedures require firefighting crews to be standing by for every launch, thus the launch was delayed so that all resources could concentrate on the growing fire.[11] While all fires at Vandenberg were contained by September 27, facilities and instrumentation needed to be surveyed for damage and, due to the delays, the launch did not occur until November 11, 2016.[10][12][10][13]The fire also caused widespread power outages in multiple facilities on the base including at least one fire station which had to operate on generator power.[6]
WorldView-4 was launched on 11 November 2016 at 18:30:33 UTC from Vandenberg Air Force Base Space Launch Complex 3E aboard an Atlas V rocket.[5][26] The rocket launched in the 401 configuration with serial number AV-062, and was provided and administered by United Launch Alliance.[6] This is the same rocket that had been scheduled to launch the InSight Mars lander, which was delayed until 2018.[27] The rocket had been erected at the Vandenberg launch pad on 16 December 2015 for the InSight mission; after the WorldView-4 mission took the place of InSight, the rocket was allowed to remain vertical at the pad protected by its mobile service tower.[2] The WorldView-4 payload was fixed atop the rocket during the second week of September 2016.[2]Originally scheduled for launch on 29 June 2016, the flight was rescheduled to 15 September and then to 16 September.[6]During countdown on 16 September, the launch was scrubbed due to a liquid hydrogen leak in the ground support equipment resulting in an ice ball forming on an umbilical cable. The launch was rescheduled for 18 September to allow for the replacement of a fill-and-drain valve, determined to be the cause of the leak.[28]The Canyon Fire, a wildfire that burned over 5,157 hectares (12,742 acres) on the southern section of Vandenberg,[29] resulted in a further launch delay so that the base could "concentrate [their] resources on the situation at hand."[30] As a result of scheduling availability on the Western Range, the flight was rescheduled for 26 September.[30] Continued efforts in fighting the Canyon Fire caused an indeterminate delay of the launch to no earlier than October 2016.[31] Four additional fires of varying sizes broke out between 22 and 27 September; while all were contained by the end of the 27th, base commander John Moss stated that until all facilities and instrumentation could by surveyed, no preliminary launch date could be determined.[32][33]Repairs were made to the base's infrastructure affected by the wildfire, including power and communications, and the launch date was reset to 6 November.[34] The date was later pushed back to 11 November as ULA worked to fix "minor Atlas V booster issues" found during preparations.[35]Canyon Fire symbolically impacting these missions:

The Asteroid Approach Phase will start in mid-August 2018 when Bennu will start growing in the spacecraft’s telescopic camera from just a speck of light. Major rendezvous burns will slow down the spacecraft for arrival in the vicinity of Bennu in November 2018 to initiate a year-long surveying phase during which the spacecraft will orbit the asteroid at different distances. Several rehearsals will be held before OSIRIS-REx will commit to a touch-and-go maneuver to hopefully collect up to two Kilograms of sample material from Bennu.
Arrival at Bennu will be marked around November 18, 2018 when OSIRIS-REx arrives at a distance of five Kilometers where the approach will be halted for a period of tandem flying at the 5km distance.
The new launch period for the mission begins May 5, 2018, with a Mars landing scheduled for Nov. 26, 2018.

Stereophotogrammetry is a technique that has been used to determine the topography of many Solar System bodies [1]. Characterizing the terrain and elevation with images taken by the OSIRIS-REx CAMera Suite (OCAMS) is a requirement for the OSIRIS-REx Mission, which will survey and sample asteroid (101955) Bennu in 2019 [2]. Understanding the topography of the sample site will be of chief importance—the OSIRIS-REx Touch And Go Sample Acquisition Mechanism (TAGSAM) can only interface with terrain that meets specific slope and regolith aggregate-size thresholds. To prepare for the OSIRIS-REx sampling event, we have carried out a proof of concept study using NEAR MSI optical images. In 2001 the NEAR-Shoemaker team successfully landed the spacecraft on asteroid (433) Eros after nearly a yearlong survey [3]

“This is an opportunity to explore a new type of world – not one of rock or ice, but of metal,” said Psyche Principal Investigator Lindy Elkins-Tanton of Arizona State University in Tempe. “16 Psyche is the only known object of its kind in the solar system, and this is the only way humans will ever visit a core. NASA’s other missions to asteroids began with the NEAR orbiter of asteroid Eros, which arrived in 2000, and continues with Dawn, which orbited Vesta and now is in an extended mission phase at Ceres. The OSIRIS-REx mission, which launched on Sept. 8, 2016, is speeding toward a 2018 rendezvous with the asteroid Bennu, and will deliver a sample back to Earth in 2023. Each mission focuses on a different aspect of asteroid science to give scientists the broader picture of solar system formation and evolution.

By 1973 Earnhardt was working in Concord, at Punch Whitaker's wheel alignment shop on Route 9. He had married again—this time to Brenda Gee. Their daughter, Kelley, was born in 1972. After a while Earnhardt found a cache of old Ford Falcons and selected one to be his new race car. The family lived poorly in assorted apartments and trailers, and Earnhardt was sometimes slow in paying his bills. They all rode around in old fixer-upper cars, and all the while he kept a steady stream of race cars moving through the garage at the old Earnhardt family home on Sedan Avenue in Kannapolis. Earnhardt and Gee soon had a son, Dale Jr., born in 1974. That same year Earnhardt Sr. switched from dirt racing to asphalt. He picked up a used race car and drove in local races as part of the old Sportsman division which later became the Busch circuit.

STS-119 spacewalkers Richard Arnold and Joseph Acaba, both former teachers, will fly mementos, such as small flags, from some of the schools where they taught. Among the assortment of flags being flown is a National Guard design from Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s racing team. Earnhardt races in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series in the No. 88 car sponsored in part by the National Guard.
