KIRO 7 reached out to Marc Fries, Ph.D., cosmic dust curator for NASA, and he said the explosion off the coast of Washington was the biggest over the continental U.S. in 25 years.

What made the explosion even more momentous was the amount of material deposited on the ocean floor, appearing in weather radar data, Fries said.

‘Fireball’ That Caused Shaking Along Washington State Coast Was About the Size of a Minivan: NASA

This was one of the largest bolides produced in the past 20 years, Fries said. It came into the atmosphere as one rock, roughly the size of a minivan. Made up of rock and ice, it quickly broke down into smaller pieces, with the largest pieces – about the size of a brick – hitting the ocean.

"It's not too rare to see a fireball. But for those who saw the big boom of light Tuesday night, it was a special experience.
"I've seen a few fireballs," Fries said. "But never one large enough to shake the ground."

The Mars Surveyor 2001 Orbiter, renamed 2001 Mars Odyssey, was launched April 7, 2001 reached Mars on October 24, 2001. After aerobraking from October 2001 until January 2002, Mars Odyssey began mapping the planet on February 19, 2002.

Later, the lander spacecraft was adapted^[2] to be used in the Mars Phoenix Lander which landed successfully on Mars in 2008. The Phoenix lander lasted 157 Martian sols on the surface of Mars' polar region and made several discoveries including observing snowfall and detecting the presence of perchlorate in the Martian soil.

While the proposal for Phoenix was being written, the Mars Odyssey Orbiter used its gamma-ray spectrometer and found the distinctive signature of hydrogen on some areas of the Martian surface, and the only plausible source of hydrogen on Mars would be water in the form of ice, frozen below the surface. The mission was therefore funded on the expectation that Phoenix would find water ice on the arctic plains of Mars.
