A Spectacular Finale

The Paralympic flame rose signalling the end of a wonderful Opening Ceremony. The giant sphere of flame morphed into the ‘Sun of Coexistence’ emitting a bright red light. In the final moments it transitions one more time, now turning into a full white moon shining upon the Olympic Stadium. A fantastic troupe of moonlight dancers send us off into the night.

The Taegeukgi Arrives on the Frozen River

A Japanese proposal to stop using swastikas to identify temples on tourist maps ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games has caused a backlash on social media ©GSI

Had the 1940 Summer Games been held, a never-before used method of bringing the Olympic Flame from Nazi Germany to Japan was proposed - by air delivery, in the purpose-built Messerschmitt Me 261 Adolfine long-range aircraft, which was designed to have a maximum range of some 9,500 km (5,900 mi) unrefueled.[13]

Khepri ḫprj is derived from Egyptian language verb ḫpr, meaning "develop", "come into being", or "create".[1] The god was connected with the scarab beetle (ḫprr in Egyptian), because the scarab rolls balls of dung across the ground, an act that the Egyptians saw as a symbol of the forces that move the sun across the sky. Khepri was thus a solar deity. Young dung beetles, having been laid as eggs within the dung ball, emerge from it fully formed. Therefore, Khepri also represented creation and rebirth, and he was specifically connected with the rising sun and the mythical creation of the world.

The former SS member Wilhelm Landig of the Vienna Lodge "coined the idea of the Black Sun, a substitute swastika and mystical source of energy capable of regenerating the Aryan race".[6] Rudolf J. Mund (also a former SS member and later also member of the Vienna Lodge) discusses a relationship of the Black Sun with alchemy. The visible sun is described as a symbol of an invisible anti-sun: "Everything that can be comprehended by human senses is material, the shadow of the invisible spiritual light. The material fire is – seen in this way – also just the shadow of the spiritual fire."[29]
